Once on shore, Dry Tortugas Island displays stunningly clear blue waters and the opportunity to explore Fort Jefferson and its history. ![]() Better weather would make for a smoother ride. I highly recommend listening to the suggestions from the staff as it was a rough ride in January when I went. On the way back, about 90% of the passengers purchased it. On my trip, approximately 1/3 of the passengers bought Dramamine on the way to the island. ![]() If they offer Dramamine, you will likely need it unless you are used to extremely rough waters. I traveled via the Yankee Freedom Ferry which is roughly a 2 1/2 hour trip each way, pun intended. The island is approximately 70 miles from Key West and is only accessible by seaplane or boat. Dry Tortugas National Parkĭry Tortugas National Park is a stunning place to visit for people of all ages. There are numerous other activities within the national park, but this was the highlight of the trip for my husband and me. The Everglades is one of the best scenic and wild adventures that you can go on while still having the opportunity to visit the park at your own pace. If you have a National Park Pass, they will refund you the money you pay for admission to the park once you present your pass. The fee for entering the park is $25.00 per vehicle, which is surprisingly affordable considering it includes entrance to the park for up to seven days. Park rangers are along the loop to ensure the safety of visitors. This offers a breath-taking opportunity to pass them at a closer distance. However, some alligators will sun themselves directly on the pavement. They often reside partially in the water and partially on land. The alligators are most commonly seen along the sides of the loop. The most exciting part about the Shark Valley Loop Trail is traveling past the numerous alligators along the loop. You can take a tram, walk, or bike around the 15-mile loop with an abundance of wildlife, from birds and fish to alligators.Ī 65-foot observation tower approximately halfway through the loop allows you to observe the scenic views and meet “Grumpy” the gigantic alligator from afar, as he does live up to his name. The trail is paved and has a wide variety of options for people of any activity level. Shark Valley, within the national park, offers the experience of a lifetime.
